Kagami Taiga enters the story as a central figure in Seirin High School's quest to challenge the dominance of the Generation of Miracles. After graduating from Teiko Middle School, the five prodigies—Ryota Kise, Shintaro Midorima, Daiki Aomine, Atsushi Murasakibara, and Seijuro Akashi—enrolled at separate high schools with elite programs. Kagami joined this fray not as one of them, but as a challenger raised primarily in the United States. His first major test came against Ryota Kise in a practice match, where Kise's ability to replicate and enhance Kagami's techniques initially overwhelmed Seirin before their unique partnership secured a victory. During the Interhigh preliminaries, the team faced Shutoku High, where Shintaro Midorima's superior shooting neutralized Kuroko's misdirection. Although Seirin prevailed there, they suffered a crushing defeat against Touhou Academy led by Daiki Aomine in the semifinals of the Tokyo qualifiers, which eliminated them from the Interhigh tournament. The tournament proper opened with the historic rematch against Touhou Academy. Kagami, now more determined than ever, pushed himself to surpass Aomine. Through Kuroko's newly developed Vanishing Drive and their refined teamwork, Seirin achieved a victory that marked Aomine's first-ever loss. Next came Yōsen High, anchored by Atsushi Murasakibara's towering defense. Murasakibara's physical dominance initially stifled Seirin's offense until Kagami unlocked the Zone, matching his opponent's power to lead Seirin to victory. The final challenge arrived against Rakuzan High, led by Seijuro Akashi, whose Emperor Eye allowed him to anticipate and control every play. However, Kagami entered the "true Zone" with Kuroko serving as his gatekeeper. Together they dismantled Rakuzan's dominance using Kuroko's perfected Phantom Shot, securing victory in the Winter Cup and cementing Seirin as Japan's top high school team.
